New Delhi: Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, has simply refused to be the opposition’s presidential candidate. He expressed his gratitude for the offer of his name on behalf of the united opposition in a statement. He also denied his presidential candidacy at the same time.
“I implore the opposition to consider another candidate who might be a better president than I.” On June 15, Gopalkrishna Gandhi responded to suspicions that he will be fielded by the opposition by saying it was too early to discuss. Some opposition leaders reportedly spoke with Gopal Krishna Gandhi on the phone and offered him the post of presidential candidate.
He was also the opposition’s vice-presidential candidate against Venkaiah Naidu earlier in 2017, however he was defeated. In the past, Gopal Krishna Gandhi worked as a diplomat. In addition, he served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009. In addition, Gopal Krishna Gandhi served as India’s High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka.
