Toxic Positivity: What Is It? How Does It Affect How We Feel?


Toxic positivity: What is it? It occurs when you appear pleasant or upbeat even though you’re not feeling well. When someone is going through a difficult time, we frequently hear people telling them to “just cheer up” or “Don’t worry, it will get better.” While maintaining a happy attitude on life is beneficial for your mental health, the fact that life isn’t always cheerful presents a challenge. Our emotional range is extremely broad. We all endure and deal with painful feelings and events. Even if these feelings are unpleasant, it’s crucial to accept and deal them honestly.

Like anything else, too much positivity is terrible. Inauthenticity, losing touch with reality, and even alienating yourself from your loved ones are all effects of toxic optimism.

People have made the dismissing of sentiments in general exalted, rather than feeling safe discussing their human emotions and receiving support. People who are experiencing difficulty are especially vulnerable to the negative effects of toxic positivity.

Shame: The best source of support is family, friends, and loved ones. However, people begin to believe that their emotions and feelings are inappropriate when the support system doesn’t respect or welcome them with open arms.

Toxic positivity only makes the guilt stronger. It conveys the idea that it is the person’s responsibility if they cannot find a way to remain optimistic despite catastrophe.

Avoids experiencing human emotion: Toxic positivity feeds the avoidance response. People develop the ability to avoid painful emotional circumstances. They flee the issues rather than dealing with them.

Growth is Affected: While it gives us the freedom to avoid emotions that could serve as triggers, it also prevents us from facing difficult emotions, thus limiting growth.

If you come across someone who is struggling, just listen to them out and refrain from using harmful affirmations. “I understand,” or “I’m here for you,” are appropriate responses.
