Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati made the declaration on Saturday. Droupadi Murmu is the NDA’s nominee for the 2022 presidency.
Given that the Adivasi samaj represents a significant component of the party’s movement, the BSP has decided to endorse Droupadi Murmu in the upcoming presidential elections, according to Mayawati. “This choice was made with our party and its cause in mind, for electing a capable and dedicated Adivasi woman president of the country, not to help the BJP or NDA, not to go against the Opposition UPA.”
Murmu submitted her candidacy papers for the July 18 presidential election on Friday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presenting the set of papers to Returning Officer P C Mody. Murmu is expected to be the first tribal leader and second woman to hold the position.
While reiterating that her party is free to make its choice regarding the election, Mayawati also criticised the Opposition for excluding her from deliberations when selecting the presidential candidate.
Many opposition parties, including the Congress, the TMC, and the NCP, have endorsed former Union minister Yashwant Sinha as their joint candidate.
