The Delhi Police Special Cell on Wednesday registered a FIR against eight people, including Naveen Kumar Jindal, the expelled head of the Delhi BJP’s media unit, journalist Saba Naqvi, Hindu Mahasabha office bearer Pooja Shakun Pandey, Maulana Mufti Nadeem from Rajasthan, and Peace Party chief spokesperson Shadab Chauhan, alleging that their social media posts could cause divisions between two communities and hurt religious sentiments. Police claimed they have filed a second FIR under similar sections against suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and other social media users.

According to a senior police officer, their Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Operations (IFSO) team had been monitoring their posts and discovered claimed religiously unacceptable remarks. DCP (IFSO) KPS Malhotra stated, “We have launched a FIR under numerous IPC sections against persons who were propagating hate messages, instigating various groups, and creating situations that were harmful to the maintenance of public calm.”

“This FIR against multiple individuals will investigate the roles of various social media entities in promoting false and incorrect information with the intent of causing unrest on the cyber space and having ramifications on the physical space, thereby jeopardising the country’s social fabric,” Malhotra said.

Abdur Rehman, Gulzar Ansari, and Anil Kumar Meena are among those listed in the FIR.

Maulana Mufti Nadeem, from Rajasthan’s Bundi, is believed to have appeared in a viral video in which he is heard threatening violence against anybody who talk against the Prophet.

Pooja Shakun Pandey, a Hindu Mahasabha office bearer, was recently charged by the Aligarh police with posting derogatory statements about Friday namaz on social media. In 2019, the 41-year-old Hindu Mahasabha national secretary, together with her husband and Hindu Mahasabha national spokesperson, Ashok Pandey, were detained for allegedly recreating Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination on his death anniversary.
