TEHRAN: According to Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the “oppressive” US sanctions against Iran should be lifted in a way that supports other countries’ long-term interests while facilitating easy foreign investment in Iran (SNSC).
Shamkhani made the remarks during a meeting with the visiting Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani of Qatar, according to Xinhua news, which cited Iran’s Nour News. According to reports, he emphasised that Iran will continue to be committed to diplomacy until its legal rights in the nuclear discussions were realised.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly referred to as the 2015 Iranian Nuclear Deal, was the subject of recent indirect negotiations between Iran and the US in Doha before Al Thani’s visit to Tehran (JCPOA).
When Iran signed the JCPOA with major international powers in July 2015, it stipulated that its nuclear programme would be constrained in exchange for the removal of sanctions. Iran, however, broke several of its treaty requirements when former US President Donald Trump pulled Washington from the agreement in May 2018 and reinstated unilateral sanctions against it.
Beginning in April 2021, Vienna nuclear talks with Iran were suspended in March of this year due to political enmities between Tehran and Washington.
