Five Suspects Held as NIA Chief Briefs Shah; Rajasthan Duo Who Pursued Kanhaiya Lal’s Murderers for 30 Kms Hailed as Heroes

Two residents of Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district are being hailed as heroes after they helped police apprehend the culprits in the grisly murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur by pursuing the accused.

According to a report in Times of India, Shakti Singh and Prahlad Singh of Taal hamlet near Lasani in Rajsamand received a call from a police buddy asking for their assistance in catching the two attackers who were fleeing on a bike from Udaipur following the murder.

The two called the police after spotting the bike from a bus stop. The two continued to pursue the culprits for another 30 kilometres while maintaining communication with the police. This was done in the Aravalli countryside.

Gaus Mohammed and Mohammad Riyaz, the suspects who beheaded the tailor, made an effort to scare them by brandishing the cleavers. However, the police quickly apprehended the suspects.

The two met Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday after the story of bravery gained popularity. Mahipal Singh Makrana, the national president of the Rajput Karni Sena, has asked the chief minister to give Shakti Singh and Prahlad Singh positions in the administration.

In the meantime, Mohsin, the fifth suspect in connection with the murder of the Udaipur tailor, was detained by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday evening. In Jaipur, he was brought before the court amidst strict security measures.

According to a lawyer, “the court imposed police remand until July 12.” Five people have been detained thus far for their alleged involvement in the plan.

Officials claimed that the NIA chief met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday and is believed to have updated him on the status of the continuing investigations into the murders of two people in the cities of Udaipur, Rajasthan, and Amravati, Maharashtra.

Director General of the National Investigation Agency Dinkar Gupta had a 40-minute discussion with the home minister at his North Block office when the former is claimed to have updated him about the probe into the two instances.

Both the fatal stabbing of Umesh Kolhe in Amravati and the beheading of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur were allegedly carried out by individuals seeking retribution against the victims for having backed outgoing BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma following her controversial remarks about the Prophet Mohammed. Up to five suspects were detained in connection with the murder of Lal, and the NIA on Monday requested custody of four of the seven suspects in the Kolhe case. While Kolhe was murdered in Amravati on June 21, Lal was slain on June 28 by two men who were also filming the crime.

The four individuals detained in connection with the murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal were remanded in police custody for ten days by an NIA court. After allegedly killing a tailor at his shop on Tuesday with a cleaver because he had offered support to the BJP leader Nupur Sharma, who has since been dismissed, Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad posted videos online claiming they were retaliating for an insult to Islam.
