The former governor of Jharkhand, Droupadi Murmu, is expected to be chosen as the country’s next president, making her the first member of her tribe to hold the position.
After former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha was announced as the joint nominee of the major opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC, and NCP, 64-year-old Murmu from the Santhal community in Odisha was named the presidential nominee of the BJP-led NDA on Tuesday night.
Given that the odds are overwhelmingly in favour of the governing NDA, Murmu’s election is all but guaranteed. Some of the Opposition parties, particularly the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which depends heavily on tribal votes for support, appeared to be in a pickle after BJP president J P Nadda announced her candidacy following a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board.
Murmu has “devoted her life to serving society,” according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and he is “sure she will be a terrific President.”
Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has dedicated her life to serving humanity and strengthening the underprivileged, oppressed, and marginalised, according to Modi in a tweet. She has extensive managerial expertise and a distinguished record as governor. She will make a fantastic president of our country, I’m sure of it.
“The life of Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji gives millions of people enormous inspiration, especially those who have experienced poverty and misery. Our nation will substantially benefit from her comprehension of policy issues and sympathetic temperament, he said.
Murmu, a Mayurbhanj native, served as a minister in Odisha under the BJP and BJD’s coalition government. Naveen Patnaik, the chairman of the BJD and chief minister of Odisha, described the announcement of her candidacy as a “great moment for the people” of the state.
“Congratulations to Smt. Draupadi Murmu on being named the NDA’s presidential candidate. When Hon. PM Narendra Modi ji and I talked about this, I was thrilled. For the people of Odisha, it is undoubtedly a time of pride, he tweeted.
Nadda stated before that the ruling party took steps to develop a consensus regarding the Presidential nominee when announcing the choice. “However, no agreement could be reached during the meetings. The UPA has revealed its presidential candidate as of today. Our allies and I have talked about it. Twenty or so names were taken into consideration, and each was the subject of thorough discussion. We have chosen to nominate a woman candidate from the East who is also from a tribal community, after consulting with our friends, ” he added, adding that if Murmu is elected to the position, she will be the first tribal President.
Nadda contrasted Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the former president of Murmu. Her life has been strongly tied to education, just like Dr. Radhakrishnan’s. She worked as a teacher, he claimed.
According to party sources, the leadership’s initial option was Murmu, who has the Prime Minister’s support. She had had been mentioned as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2017; however, the BJP ultimately chose Ram Nath Kovind, who will step down from office next month after serving his full term.
The decision to select Murmu was praised as “excellent and politically significant” by at least three top BJP figures. There are numerous reasons for the party cadre to applaud this decision, according to a senior minister in the Modi administration. She is a woman, a tribal leader who is grounded and humble, a fervent supporter of the BJP, and her appointment fits with the party’s central theme of administration, Sabka Saath. Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas, and Sabka Vikas. Rashtrapati Bhavan will benefit from Droupadi Murmu’s extensive administrative experience, from the district to the state levels.
