Smoothies are a popular wellness fad that is often promoted as a healthy snack. These adaptable beverages can be tailored to suit any taste or dietary requirement. Smoothies are available to make at home or to buy fresh or bottled in speciality cafes and grocery stores. While some smoothies contain sugar or other unhealthy components, others are composed entirely of fruits and vegetables. We’re often left wondering if combining fruits and vegetables in a smoothie can be harmful to our health.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, dietitian Garima Goyal discussed why blending veggies and fruits is a contentious topic. She said that because fruits and vegetables have different digestibility indexes, combining the two can cause stomach problems.
According to her, when you eat something, the gut releases different enzymes that don’t differentiate between the items. “The time it takes to digest fruits and vegetables also differs,” she added, saying that fruits take roughly two hours to digest and vegetables take four to five hours. “All enzymes have quite precise functions,” Goyal explained, “and there is very little information on the detrimental consequences of mixing meals.”
Several arguments claim that “the stomach is built to manage foods that differ in textures and digestibility indices with no ramifications,” according to the expert.
While fruits and vegetables are widely considered to be two distinct classes, Goyal finds a number of parallels between the two. She claims that the majority of fruits and vegetables include nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, which serve as antioxidants in the body, assisting in the removal of dangerous compounds known as free radicals. These free radicals are known to cause diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and others.
Fibre is abundant in vegetables and fruits, which aids in keeping one full as well as managing blood pressure, insulin, and cholesterol levels.
