Crisis on the way: intel told Maharashtra govt two months ago

The failure of the Shiv Sena to discern the mood and disgruntlement existing among its legislators has raised concerns on the hold of Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on the party. The divergence demonstrated by Sena MLAs has also thrown question marks on the capabilities of the State Intelligence Department (SID), which is mandated to keep a close check on the political developments in Maharashtra, failed to foresee the impending crisis.

Sources in the Maharashtra Police stated that the SID had alerted the government that eight to 10 of its MLAs, including Sena’s Eknath Shinde, were in touch with Opposition leaders. According to insiders, the intelligence officials had supplied classified information to the government roughly two months ago but no action was taken on it.

The SID, which monitors probable developments in the state, offers advance information on political developments and \smovements, crimes as well as anti-social, terrorist and Maoist actions. A senior IPS officer added, “The information on political developments is often supplied verbally to the government.”

“In such a case, with aid from the SID, some precautionary steps should have been done. The concern, however, is whether the inputs had been submitted to the government,” stated one official.

According to insiders, the state police frequently receives intelligence from police personnel designated as special security guards for politicians.
