Coronavirus News Live Updates: Palghar, Thane and Mumbai recorded the highest jump in fresh Covid-19 cases in the last one week with an increase of 350 per cent, 192 per cent and 136 per cent respectively. After four straight days, Mumbai saw a drop in cases on Monday, possibly due to less testing on Sunday.

Mumbai reported 676 fresh cases on Monday (out of the state’s 1,036 new cases), contributing 60%-70% of the cases to the state’s daily tally since the last week of May, when the state-wide figures began to rise. Health Minister Rajesh Tope said hospitalization rates in the state and Mumbai remain low.

As the Covid-19 cases rise in Bengaluru, the city’s civic agency has made masks mandatory in public places and decided to increase the virus testing to 20,000 per day from the current 16,000 per day.

“Every day, over 200 new COVID cases are being reported and we are conducting 16,000 tests. Now, Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath has asked us to increase the testing by BBMP from 16,000 to 20,000 and private laboratories to 4,000. We will strengthen information, education and communication activities,” Bruhat Bengaluru Municipal Corporation special commissioner Dr Harish Kumar told reporters on Monday.

• Coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu fell to 100 on Monday and 90 new cases were reported in the state. A day earlier, 107 cases were reported.

• 65 new cases of Kovid-19 were reported in Telangana on Monday, taking the number of infected to 7,93,672. The maximum number of 32 cases were reported in Hyderabad.

Chhattisgarh recorded 15 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, taking the tally of infections to 11,52,514, while the death toll stood at 14,034, an official said.

Minister of State Ma Subramaniam said on Sunday that new omicron variants BA4 and BA5 have been detected from samples collected in Tamil Nadu and results from a laboratory in Hyderabad. The Minister of Medical and Family Welfare said that out of 150 samples, 12 samples were sent to the laboratory in Hyderabad, which has confirmed the presence of new variants marking the emergence of new coronavirus variants in the state.

• The daily graph of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai fell below the 700 mark for the first time since June 1, with the city reporting 676 fresh infections on Monday, 285 less than the day before. No fresh COVID-19 fatalities were reported, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation bulletin said.

• The Goa government’s expert committee on COVID-19 will meet on June 9 to decide whether the government needs to intervene in view of the current COVID-19 situation. The state recorded 30 new coronavirus infections on Monday, raising the caseload to 2,46,053, the health department said. The state reported no new deaths.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Monday that wearing a mask is not mandatory, but people should use it voluntarily to prevent the spread of coronavirus, amid rising COVID-19 cases in the state.

West Bengal on Monday reported 53 new COVID-19 cases, six less than the previous day, taking the tally to 20,19,686, a health department bulletin said. It added that the death toll remains at 21,205 as no fresh death due to the infection has been reported in the last 24 hours.
