Madhu Mantena, Mythoverse Studios, and Allu Entertainment will produce the Mahabharata. The Indian mythology epic Maharabharat explores the struggle between justice and wrong as the Kauravas and Paavas engage in combat in the ancient Indian city of Kurukshetra.

The announcement was made during the expo by Gaurav Banerjee, Head of Content for Disney+ Hotstar and HSM Entertainment Network, Disney Star. “It would indeed be a privilege to be able to bring this incredible story to a wider global audience next year,” he said during the International Content and Operations session. “Over a billion people know the story in some form, or the other. Most of them in my country heard them as children from their grandparents. There are billions more who remain unaware of what they have been missing.”

In a statement, producer Madhu Mantena said: “We at Mythoverse are absolutely delighted to have this opportunity provided by Disney+ Hotstar to bring out a rendition of this great Indian epic ‘Mahabharata’ and to announce this news on a prestigious global platform at the D23 Expo. It is said that every known emotional conflict experienced by mankind finds form in Mahabharata through its complex characters and storylines.”

The war epic has previously been screened multiple times. The epic was produced for television in 1988 by BR Chopra. It was a huge success for Doordarshan. The epic was also produced for television in 2013 by Siddharth Kumar Tewary. It may be seen on Disney+ Hotstar as well.
