Assam is reeling from heavy floods, with two police officers drowning and 71 people murdered so far



GUWAHATI: Floods prompted by relentless monsoon rains are worsening the situation in Assam. Several Assam districts are currently flooded. The floods have affected around 42,28,157 lakh people. Floods and landslides have claimed the lives of 71 people so far. Nine people have died in floods and landslides in Assam in the previous 24 hours, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, and floods have affected 5,137 villages.

People have been forced to flee their houses and seek refuge in rescue camps as the flood situation has worsened. On Sunday night, two police officers were washed away in flood waters in Central Assam’s Nagaon district. According to police reports, a constable and an officer went out late at night to assess the damage caused by the flood. Both police officers were washed away in the floodwaters during this period. The constable’s body has been found, while the search for the missing police officer continues.

Assam Today, June 20, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma will meet with the Deputy Commissioner and Sub-Divisional Officer to discuss the present flood situation. This was announced on Twitter by CM Sharma himself. At the same time, the Indian Army’s rescue mission is in its fourth day. The Army is always active in rescuing those stuck in floodwaters despite the bad weather.
