As Mithali Raj quits from international cricket, Taapsee Pannu writes a heartfelt note: ‘Taught me grit, perseverance’

Indian player Mithali Raj announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket on Wednesday, and actress Taapsee Pannu composed an emotional tribute for her. Mithali Raj posted a note to her Instagram account saying, “Today is the day I resign from all forms of international cricket.”

“I feel now is the appropriate time to call it a day on my playing career because the squad is in good hands with some very talented young players and Indian cricket’s future is bright,” she added. Taapsee Pannu, who will play Mithali Raj in the biopic Shabaash Mithu, posted on Instagram about the cricketer’s accomplishments. “Some personalities and their accomplishments are gender neutral,” she wrote, describing how she shifted people’s perceptions of the game.

“There are cricketers who have records to their credit.” There are cricketers who have a large fan base. Here are several cricketers who will inspire you and convince you that if they can do it, so can you. Then there’s Mithali, who did it all in her signature graceful style while also changing the game of cricket in terms of female presence. “She will be remembered for her contribution to women’s cricket not just in our nation, but around the world,” Taapsee said in a statement, adding that she feels “lucky” to have been given the opportunity to play her on screen in Srijit Mukerji’s film.

“I just got too lucky as a fan who got to live her magnificent 23-year journey for a bit on camera, which taught me so much about persistence and perseverance,” she ended. We will never be able to thank her enough.”

On July 15, Shabaash Mithu will be released in theatres. After her next flick Thappad in 2020, this is Taapsee’s first theatrical release.
