A Psychologist Offers Advice on How to Limit Your Child’s Screen Time

The COVID-19 pandemic not only kept us apart for the sake of social separation, but it also hooked us all to our screens a lot more than we used to. The new normal has gotten our youngsters addicted to screens, no matter how hard we attempt to distract them. Psychologist Dr. Jazmine McCoy gave some recommendations on restricting screen time for children, recognising it as a pressing issue.

In response to the growing issue of children’s screen time, the psychologist offered some advice on how parents should limit their children’s screen time. “Before exposing kids to new technologies like social media and virtual reality, it’s crucial to focus on developing a foundation of open communication, digital safety, and healthy screen habits,” the health expert advised all the parents. And the sooner we begin to impart these lessons, the better.” Her most recent Instagram post detailed four practical strategies that parents can use to keep their children away from devices.

She urged parents to build a routine around screen time and to set criteria for enabling their children to watch television, such as having completed their homework beforehand. While letting your child engage with the screen while you finish your vital task may be pleasant for you as a parent, it may easily backfire with tantrums, rebellion, and detachment.

She then advised parents to create a family media plan and establish screen-free zones and hours. Screen-free zones, for example, can be the kitchen or dining table, and screen-free hours can be when eating.

She also recommended choosing quality screen time, which she defined as screen time spent interacting with people digitally, since this will expose children to the positive aspects of technology. Finally, she stated that parents can use the media to educate their children. Indulge children in shows and movies that teach them positive behaviours, for example.
